Servia Steps Up to the Podium in San Jose

The San Jose Grand Prix, hosted this past weekend on the streets of San Jose, California, wins hands-down for the most impressive and exciting race of the season thus far. Beside having a race winner who was not sporting the golden arches, fans were treated to several lead changes including one by our own Oriol Servia who jumped to the head of the field early on and went on to lead 42 laps during the race.

Servia and the Forsythe Racing Team put in an impressive performance all weekend, earning a second-row starting position for Sunday’s race. After a near tangle on the first turn, Servia quickly took advantage of his starting position and didn’t waste any time in getting to the head of the pack. He found himself in stiff competition with rookie Neel Jani for most of the race, as the two swapped track positions on several occasions.

Though he still had a little Power to Pass left in the bank, Servia couldn’t quite find the speed to overtake Jani in the end, and landed himself third on the podium, his second podium visit this season.

Friday the 13th

Despite the superstitious beliefs surrounding the date, today is anything but unlucky as we celebrate Oriol’s birthday. Now one of the seasoned Champ Car veterans to be found around the paddock, Servia has always been a fan favorite with his amiable personality and ability to drive for any team, big or small, and produce noteworthy results.

Happy Birthday Uri from all your fans across the globe!

Servia Shines in Spectacular Start

Veteran driver Oriol Servia let his star shine over the weekend as the Champ Car World Series dove headfirst into the second race of the Canadian Triple Crown at Toronto. Servia relied on his past experience on the 1.755 mile street course, combined with hard work on the part of his team and engineers to land a provisional second-place starting position after Friday’s qualifying. Saturday’s sessions were promising as well, and Servia secured his best start of the year in third place on the starting grid.

Come race day, inclement weather earlier in the day, paired with a forecast of possible rain for the afternoon, threatened to stir up the race results. But no one could have predicted the huge leap Servia would pull out on the first corner of the first lap as he sped by Sebastien Bourdais and Justin Wilson to overtake the race lead. Oriol was high and dry (for the time being) and led the first 34 laps of the race, incident free.

However, a fuel problem just before the team’s first pit stop caused the Spaniard to lose speed and surrender the lead to Bourdais. Servia pitted and came out just behind the three-time champion, but little did he know it was about to rain on his parade (quite literally). The skies opened up, and Servia on his Bridgestone slicks lost control, spinning out and sending him to the back of the field. We’ve all seen that one of this driver’s strengths is fighting his way back up through traffic, but when he spun a second time on lap 56, he made hard contact with the wall, putting an end to his day.

Despite not finishing the race, Servia still earned himself a top-ten and currently sits eighth in the championship standings.
