Bringing It Home

Oriol Servia brought home yet another Top-5 finish over the weekend after his most impressive qualifying this season saw him starting the Rexall Edmonton Indy from third position. A quick lap late in qualifying landed Servia in the Firestone Fast Six, which was soon reduced to the Firestone Fast Five after Justin Wilson sustained damage too great to repair before the last round. From there, Servia battled it out with IndyCar veterans from Penske Racing as well as with his own teammate for the top spots.

Saturday’s race ushered in much excitement both on track as well as on pit lane, though Oriol held his own throughout the afternoon, battling as high as third position. A late-race incident by Marco Andretti forced both Dan Weldon and Oriol to check up, and the Spaniard sustained front-end damage but was able to continue the race. Servia held on until the last lap when the car’s steering arm snapped, allowing IndyCar newcomer Paul Tracy to pass him for fourth position. (Had the race not been shortened from its original length of 95 laps, who knows what would have happened!)

This impressive finish bumps Servia up to 8th in the championship points standings, and Oriol continues to be the highest contender of the transition teams.

Ticket to Ride

Fasten your seatbelts and return your seatbacks and trays to their upright positions, we’re ready to go racing.

This weekend the IndyCar Series hits the runways at the Rexall Edmonton Indy and boy are these cars “flying!” Oriol Servia and Will Power for KV Racing Technology have been the guys to beat all weekend so far, finishing each session on top of the charts. Servia completed his first qualifying session in fifth position and Power in second in the alternate session; both will advance to the next round which hosts the top-six finishers from the initial two sessions. The final qualifying session will then determine the front of the field.

Both KV Racing teammates are also carrying on-board cameras this weekend, so tune in to IndyCar.com and sit in the driver’s seat along with our favorite “pilots!”

Weathering the Weather

KV Racing Technology teammates Oriol Servia and Will Power both put on an impressive show over the weekend, scoring two top-five finishes for the most competitive of the transition teams.

While the weather was less than ideal all the way up to the drop of the green flag, the two pitted with the field early on to change to slick tires and then kept their noses clean through a race plagued with off-course spins.

With 30 laps remaining, the Aussie and Spaniard found themselves running together in third and fourth positions, respectively. It was then that team co-owner Jimmy Vasser piped in to remind them to take caution and remember the “golden rule”: Never take out your teammate!

The two drivers had no problem defending their positions though and wrapping up the race in the team’s best collective finish to date with the IndyCar Series.

This weekend’s race also saw Servia reclaim the 10th position in the points standings while his teammate sits just behind him in 11th. It looks like Jimmy may not be able to breathe easy just yet…

On a side note, though the team’s recent trip to Nashville did not give them the ideal results they were looking for, Servia did lead his first laps with the IndyCar Series. However, problems both in the pits and difficult conditions on track prevented the #5 squad from finishing within the Top-10.

Stay tuned as IndyCar returns to Edmonton this Saturday at 5pm Eastern.

Speed Demon

Though KV Racing Technology entered the weekend with high hopes of a podium finish at Watkins Glen, it was not to be as Oriol Servia’s day ended early after “racing” onto pit row for his second stop of the day. Not only did Servia experience issues with a broken gearbox, but the veteran driver was cited twice (once on each pit stop) for speeding in pit lane, a violation often incurred by rookie racers more so than someone of the Catalonian’s stature.

Oriol started the race in fifth, his best IndyCar qualifying position to date. He had been running as high as third position after he stayed out as the first group of cars began to pit, but after experiencing a steering suspension problem in the morning warmup and damper issues during the race, he found himself scored in 23rd position at the drop of the checkered flag.

Oriol currently sits 10th in the championship standings, the “best of the rest” as Brianne Pedigo would say.
